There are few things in life that can be very hard to find: a good meal, a good doctor, and a good therapist.
Though, unlike a meal or a doctor, your therapist spends an entire hour with you, sometimes more than once a week, while you spill out your entire life to them. And much of the time, therapists know more about us than anyone else on earth.
The issue with this is that we have to remember that clinical social workers, psychologists, psychiatrists, and everyone else in the field are all just regular human beings, complete with their own flaws and issues as well. And we have to be careful who we become vulnerable with. This site was created after years and years of going through one awful therapist after another. Some of those therapists were super nice people who just didn't fit with my personality. And others? Used our time together to lie to me and make my issues even worse than when we started.
We patients deserve better than that. And we deserve a space to tell the whole story. Other sites, such as Healthgrades, offer a space, but at a character limit. Here at The Therapist Review, we provide a practically unlimited space for you to tell your truth about your Illinois therapist: the good, the bad, and the everything in between.
Yes, this is a place to rant about terrible therapists, but we also encourage for patients to brag on their awesome ones, too. By letting people know your opinion, you are helping others make educated decisions about their own mental healthcare. And in a world where mental healthcare is put on the lowest rung of all the healthcares, you are doing a great service for your fellow Illinoisans.
Something Important:
Remember, when getting therapy, know your therapist isn't meant to be yours forever. We grow and change, and sometimes we outgrow those that help us along our paths. The same goes for doctors. Never stay with a medical professional just because they've always been there. Stay with them because they are actually helping you. The moment the relationship feels stagnant, feel free to seek out a new one. There are plenty to choose from, especially in this day and age when you can talk on the phone to any therapist anywhere in your state, not just in your local area.
I've seen plenty of friends who never get better just because they were too afraid to move on to different mental health professional. If you fear rejection or confrontation? Feel free to stop calling them. Never stick with someone who doesn't help you just because you fear telling them you no longer want to see them anymore. You can always text them later with some excuse or another, if you don't feel comfortable telling them they aren't the therapist for you.
Thank you so much for visiting our site and we hope to hear from you soon!
